Kano Governor Settles Outstanding Fees for 84 Stranded Students in Cyprus

Tears of Joy as Governor Yusuf Resolves Five-Year Education Crisis
Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has successfully resolved the long-standing crisis of 84 Kano students abandoned in Northern Cyprus, settling their outstanding tuition and accommodation fees after years of hardship and international embarrassment.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed in an official statement on Thursday that the administration has paid N2.24 billion to clear all debts owed to Near East University in Cyprus.
Background of the Education Crisis
The affected students were originally sponsored under a foreign scholarship program initiated by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. However, the subsequent administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje discontinued funding, leaving the students stranded without financial support.
The situation led to severe consequences:
- Students locked out of classrooms
- Evictions from accommodations
- Legal threats from the host institution
- Emotional and financial trauma
Governor Yusuf’s Intervention
Governor Yusuf’s intervention has finally allowed the students to:
- Receive their long-withheld certificates
- Pursue professional careers
- Return home with dignity
Among the beneficiaries are:
- 28 medical students (MBBS graduates)
- Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy graduates
- Computer and Biomedical Science professionals
Employment Opportunities for Graduates
In a further show of support, Governor Yusuf has directed the automatic employment of all returning students into the Kano State civil service, ensuring their hard-earned education translates into meaningful careers.
This resolution marks the end of a five-year ordeal that had drawn criticism from human rights groups and diaspora communities about the politicization of education and abandonment of citizens abroad.
