One-Party System Not Suitable for Democracy, Says President Tinubu

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit held at the State House Conference Centre on Thursday, President Tinubu addressed party leaders, the National Working Committee, National Assembly leadership, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum—comprising 22 governors—who collectively endorsed him for a second term in 2027.

Economic Reforms Yield Positive Results

The president emphasized that his administration’s focus on economic reforms for long-term gains has received positive reviews both domestically and internationally. “A one-party system is not suitable for democracy,” Tinubu stated. “We are one party ruling and carrying on with the aspirations of Nigerians. You don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket.”

He added that citizens have the constitutional right to choose their political associations, welcoming more supporters to the APC. “I am happy with what we have accomplished and expecting more people to come; that’s the game,” he said.

Progress Amid Challenges

Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced since assuming office in May 2023 but highlighted progress through difficult but necessary reforms. “Through our Renewed Hope Agenda, our administration pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift our people out of poverty,” he explained.

The president pointed to key achievements, including the elimination of arbitrage-driven multiple foreign exchange rates and upcoming tax reforms. “Because of the reforms, our country now attracts foreign direct investments that will ultimately create jobs and improve living standards,” he said.

Party Leaders Rally Behind Tinubu

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, moved a motion endorsing Tinubu for 2027, citing his “inspiring and visionary leadership.” The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje declared Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the next presidential election, urging members to “reject internal sabotage” and strengthen grassroots engagement.

National Assembly Leaders Pledge Support

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas praised Tinubu’s leadership and pledged legislative support for his second-term bid.

The summit reviewed the administration’s performance across key sectors including health, infrastructure, and security.
