Northern Democrats Explore New Political Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

LND Backs Opposition Coalition, Eyes Major Political Shift

The League of Northern Democrats (LND), a prominent political pressure group, has announced plans to potentially form a new political party as part of strategic preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. This move signals a significant effort to reshape the nation’s political landscape.

Key Decisions at Abuja Meeting

The group made this declaration during a high-level meeting on May 22, 2025, at Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja. The gathering, chaired by former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister of Education Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, saw participation from 147 members.

Key outcomes of the meeting included:

  • Endorsement of the group’s constitution
  • Ratification of previous meeting minutes
  • Approval of a new leadership structure
  • Directive to complete formal registration as an association

Strategic Political Alliances

The LND resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group led by former Senate President David Mark, aiming to build a strong political front for the 2027 elections. The group plans to begin consultations about forming a new political party – their preferred option – to attract dissatisfied members from major parties, while keeping merger possibilities open.

Northern Political Consolidation

In a move to strengthen regional influence, the LND agreed to coordinate a larger northern stakeholders’ summit, following earlier discussions at the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) meeting in Kaduna.

Constitutional Stand and Governance Critique

The group took a strong position against lawmakers from Delta and Kebbi States who defected from their original parties, threatening civil resistance unless the National Assembly declares their seats vacant. They cited constitutional violations in their stance.

The LND also criticized northern governors for their perceived inaction regarding poverty, insecurity, and economic challenges in the region, accusing them of failing to address growing public discontent.

The meeting concluded with reaffirmed commitments to political reform, constitutional accountability, and improved governance across Northern Nigeria.
