Tears of Joy as Governor Resolves Five-Year Education Crisis

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has intervened to resolve a five-year educational crisis, fully settling the outstanding tuition and accommodation fees for 84 Kano students stranded in Northern Cyprus.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed in an official statement that the administration has cleared all debts owed to Near East University in Cyprus, totaling N2.24 billion.

From Abandonment to Redemption

The students, originally sponsored under a foreign scholarship program initiated by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were left in limbo when the subsequent administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje discontinued funding. This decision led to:

  • Classroom lockouts and accommodation evictions
  • Legal threats from the host institution
  • Severe financial and emotional distress
  • International embarrassment for Nigeria

New Beginnings for Graduates

The settlement paves the way for the affected students—including 28 medical graduates and professionals in paramedical and engineering fields—to finally receive their certificates. Governor Yusuf has further directed the automatic employment of all returning students into the Kano State civil service.

The resolution has brought emotional relief to families across Kano, with many parents reportedly shedding tears of joy at the news of their children’s long-awaited academic redemption.
