House of Representatives Calls for State of Emergency in FCT Healthcare Sector
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the healthcare sector of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing a worsening crisis that threatens residents’ lives and well-being.
Motion Highlights Critical Healthcare Shortages
The resolution followed a motion moved by Rep. Nnamdi Ezechi (PDP-Delta) during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja. Ezechi painted a grim picture of FCT’s healthcare facilities, describing them as overstretched and ill-equipped to meet growing demands.
“The FCT’s population has surged dramatically over the past two decades, yet government hospitals have seen little to no expansion,” Ezechi stated. He highlighted severe shortages of hospital beds and critical medical personnel, forcing patients to endure dangerous wait times or go without care entirely.
Urgent Interventions Needed
The House called for immediate action, including:
- Emergency funding for infrastructure upgrades
- Acquisition of essential medical equipment
- Massive recruitment of healthcare workers
Ezechi warned that without swift intervention, the situation could “escalate to unmanageable levels, undermining the right to health and threatening the well-being of residents in the nation’s capital.”
Unanimous Support for Healthcare Reform
Lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms to prevent further loss of lives and improve health outcomes in the FCT.
