First Lady Remi Tinubu Warns: Uneducated Youth a National Disaster
Nigeria’s First Lady Sounds Alarm on Education Crisis
Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria, has issued a stark warning about the dangers of neglecting youth education, stating that an uneducated generation would spell disaster for the nation’s future.
Education as a Cornerstone of Development
During a meeting with representatives from the Merck Foundation in Abuja on Wednesday, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that education remains fundamental to national progress. Her comments came as part of discussions about her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which prioritizes educational opportunities for Nigerian youth.
“I believe once you have an educated population, the country will grow in bounds,” she stated. “It will be such a disaster to hand over the future to an uneducated generation.”
Partnership with Merck Foundation
The First Lady praised the German philanthropic organization for its contributions to Nigeria’s health and education sectors, particularly its scholarship programs in reproductive and fertility medicine. She highlighted the need for greater focus on girls’ education and healthcare support, noting that infertility stigma remains a significant challenge in many African communities.
In recognition of her advocacy work, the Merck Foundation named Senator Tinubu as the new ambassador for their “More Than A Mother” campaign—a global initiative combating infertility stigma and promoting gender equality.
Strengthening Educational Opportunities
Mrs. Tinubu revealed that her Renewed Hope Initiative is actively working to expand scholarship platforms for Nigerian youth. “We must open more doors for our young people through education,” she emphasized.
Professor Frank Strangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of Merck Foundation, commended the First Lady’s leadership, describing Nigeria as a strategic partner in their mission to transform lives across Africa.
Future Collaborations
Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, expressed interest in establishing a formal partnership with the RHI to focus on women’s empowerment, medical outreach, and educational opportunities for underprivileged girls.
“Nigeria is very important to us. In you, the Foundation finds a worthy partner willing to expand the frontiers of our shared cause,” Dr. Kelej stated.
The meeting concluded with both parties committing to deepen their collaboration to accelerate progress on shared development goals.
