Let Technology Lead the Way — CGC Adeniyi Urges Officers at ICT Retreat in Abuja

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has emphasized the critical role of technology in modernizing the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) during a three-day retreat organized by the ICT/Modernisation Department.

Embracing Digital Transformation

The retreat, themed “Turn off Work; Turn on Retreat”, focused on enhancing officers’ capabilities in cutting-edge technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, and Software Development. The event took place at IBETO Hotels, Abuja on April 16, 2025.

CGC Adeniyi expressed his satisfaction with the gathering, calling it “the largest assembly of highly talented, motivated, and skilled ICT officers in the history of the Service.” He reminded participants of their crucial role as drivers of change within the NCS.

Technology as the Engine of Modernization

“We’re at a point where ICT is no longer just a support function; it is the engine room of our modernization efforts,” Adeniyi stated. He highlighted the department’s recent achievements including:

  • Successful implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) program
  • Piloting digital Customs declarations
  • Automating container transfers to inland terminals

Ambitious Digital Goals

The CGC set ambitious targets for the Service, challenging officers to:

  • Reduce physical examinations at ports by 50% before Q3 2025
  • Increase intelligence-based container selection to at least 50%
  • Enhance digital profiling using AI and cloud-based systems

“We must apply existing tools deliberately and systematically,” Adeniyi emphasized, underscoring the importance of technology-driven solutions in customs operations.

Department’s Commitment to Excellence

Deputy Comptroller-General Kikelomo Adeola, head of the ICT/Modernisation Department, reaffirmed her team’s commitment to the CGC’s vision. “When great minds unite with a shared purpose, no challenge is insurmountable,” she told journalists.

Adeola highlighted the department’s readiness to strengthen systems and uphold the core values of innovation, integrity, and institutional strength. “Together, we will elevate our digital transformation journey to new heights,” she concluded.
