Borno State to Close Muna IDP Camp in Coming Weeks, Says Governor Zulum

Governor Explains Decision to Shut Down Displacement Camp

By Kolawole Ojebisi

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced plans to close the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri within weeks, marking another phase in the state’s recovery from insurgency.

The governor revealed this decision during an early morning inspection visit to the camp on Monday, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to helping displaced residents return to normal lives.

Transition from Emergency to Recovery

“About 75 percent of the residents had already been resettled,” Zulum stated, assuring remaining inhabitants that the government would provide livelihood support as they prepare to return to their communities.

The Muna camp was established at the peak of insecurity in Northeast Nigeria, when Borno became a hotspot for banditry and Boko Haram activities. The humanitarian crisis left approximately 10,000 people homeless, necessitating the camp’s creation.

Progress in Camp Closures

Zulum noted the closure would represent a significant milestone in the state’s shift from emergency humanitarian response to long-term recovery and resettlement programs.

This move fulfills the governor’s earlier promise to close all IDP camps in the state capital. The administration has already successfully closed more than 12 such camps since taking office.
