EFCC Confirms Arrest of Activist Verydarkman, Sparks Protests in Abuja
Anti-graft agency responds to growing public outcry over detention
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of controversial rights activist Martin Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM).

Details of the Arrest
According to PREMIUM TIMES reports, EFCC operatives apprehended VDM at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja on Friday. The arrest was confirmed by the activist’s legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju.
The detention has sparked significant backlash on social media, with prominent figures including 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Afrobeat star Davido demanding his immediate release.
EFCC’s Official Statement
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale told BBC News Pidgin: “We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners. We will release him once he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible. We are law-abiding.”
Oyewale emphasized the agency’s obligation to protect the identities of complainants while investigating the allegations against the activist.
Public Protests Erupt
In response to the arrest, protesters gathered at two key locations in Abuja:
- The GTBank branch where VDM was arrested
- Near the EFCC headquarters in Jabi

Protesters carried placards demanding VDM’s release, describing his detention as unlawful. Social media posts showed significant crowds at both protest locations.
