Coalition Protests DSS Detention of Edo Human Rights Activists
Civil Society Groups Demand Immediate Release of Kola Edokpayi and Hadson Orako

A coalition of civil society organizations and human rights activists under the banner of Civil Society Community Edo State staged a protest on Monday against the prolonged detention of two activists by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Background of the Arrest
Kola Edokpayi and Hadson Orako were arrested on April 30th following their alleged involvement in planning a protest supporting Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso. Despite reportedly canceling the protest after meeting with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, the activists remain in DSS custody.
Growing Concerns Over Due Process
In a joint statement, group spokespersons Rev. David Ugolor and Abraham Oviawe expressed disappointment that DSS officials failed to honor their promise to release the activists last Friday. The detainees have been denied access to legal representation, family members, and associates, fueling speculation about their possible transfer to Abuja.
“This has given rise to growing concerns within our community, especially as it appears that the continued detention may exceed the period permissible under the law,” the statement read.
Call for Transparency and Due Process
The coalition emphasized their commitment to maintaining positive relations with security agencies while demanding:
- Confirmation of the activists’ current status and location
- Clear timelines for their potential release
- Immediate access to legal counsel and family visits
Civil Society Leaders Speak Out
Comrade Ogbidi Emmanuel, President of the Network of Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (NOCSON), condemned the DSS actions:
“Edo State has been peaceful until the DSS decided to disturb its peace. Nigeria is not a lawless land – we have constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”
Emmanuel warned that protests would continue until the activists are released, holding the DSS responsible for any unrest resulting from their continued detention.
The coalition maintains its preference for diplomatic resolution while vowing to persist in their demands for justice and respect for human rights.
