Osaretin Godwin Stuns Olympian Ese Ukpeseraye to Claim 200m Cycling Gold at National Sports Festival

Rising Star Delivers Historic Upset in Women’s Sprint Final

In one of the most dramatic moments of the 22nd National Sports Festival, emerging cycling sensation Osaretin Godwin shocked the Nigerian sports world by defeating Olympic cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye in the women’s 200m sprint final.

The thrilling showdown, held Thursday at the cycling venue near Kobape along the Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway, captivated spectators and became an instant highlight of the Gateway Games.

A Changing of the Guard in Nigerian Cycling

Representing Team Edo, Osaretin dominated the best-of-two race series 2-0 against Rivers State’s Ukpeseraye, ending the Olympian’s reign in the event. Ukpeseraye had previously claimed consecutive gold medals at both the Edo 2020 and Delta 2022 editions of the festival.

The young challenger showcased remarkable speed and tactical awareness, outmaneuvering the experienced champion in both races. The second race culminated in a photo-finish that added to the drama, with Ukpeseraye initially celebrating what she thought was victory before officials confirmed Osaretin’s wheel had crossed the line first.

Emotional Reactions and Recognition

The venue erupted in celebration as athletes from Edo and even some from Delta State embraced Osaretin’s triumph. The moment carried extra significance as Ukpeseraye had previously represented Delta before switching to Rivers State.

Delta State coach Moses Omozusi, who played a pivotal role in Ukpeseraye’s early career, demonstrated sportsmanship by personally congratulating Osaretin with a monetary gift in recognition of her achievement.

“I am very happy that at last I have achieved my desire to win a gold medal at the National Sports Festival meant for elite athletes, and I give glory to God,” a jubilant Osaretin told reporters after her victory.

Complete Podium Results

Ukpeseraye settled for silver in this edition, while Mary Samuel of Delta State claimed bronze. In the men’s 200m sprint, Kwara State took gold, with Delta earning silver and Edo securing bronze.

Osaretin Godwin’s stunning victory not only marks her arrival as a force in Nigerian cycling but also signals a potential shift in the sport’s hierarchy at the national level.
