Police Stations Receive Only ₦15,000 Monthly for Operations – NPTF Boss Exposes Underfunding Crisis

Police Stations Struggle with ₦500 Daily Budget
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), Mohammed Sheidu, has revealed shocking details about the severe underfunding plaguing police stations across Nigeria. In an exclusive interview, Sheidu disclosed that each police station receives a meager ₦45,000 quarterly (₦15,000 monthly) for all operational costs.
“Police stations are given ₦45,000 quarterly for imprest. That’s about ₦500 daily to cover fuel, paperwork, and other essentials,” Sheidu explained. “Many officers operate by miracles with virtually no institutional support.”
Critical Infrastructure Gaps in Police Operations
Sheidu highlighted how basic utilities like electricity remain major challenges: “That’s why the type of stations we build now prioritize stable power supply for basic operations.” He described current funding as insufficient even for fuel allocations, questioning: “The budget for fueling patrol vehicles can’t last the whole year. What happens in the remaining months?”

Funding Shortfalls and Legal Challenges
The NPTF boss outlined systemic issues with police funding mechanisms:
- 0.5% of FAAC allocation remains disputed in court since 2022
- 0.005% corporate profit contribution only began flowing in 2022
- Many funding sources remain unremitted or contested
Innovative Partnerships for Solutions
To address these challenges, the NPTF is collaborating with agencies like the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). “REA’s mandate is rural electrification while we build police stations. We’re working together to power these facilities,” Sheidu stated.
