Niger State Flood Disaster: Death Toll Rises to 117 as Dam Collapse Worsens Crisis

MOKWA, NIGER STATE — A catastrophic flood in Mokwa, central Nigeria, has claimed the lives of at least 117 people, with dozens still missing, following days of torrential rain and the collapse of a critical dam, officials have confirmed.

The disaster, which struck on May 28, submerged thousands of homes, wiped out farmlands, and displaced entire communities in one of Nigeria’s most flood-prone regions.

Emergency response teams reported that over 3,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1,500 residents displaced. At least 45 individuals were injured, and search operations continue.

Dam Collapse Triggers Widespread Destruction

Authorities confirmed that a nearby dam collapse intensified the already heavy rainfall, with floodwaters sweeping through areas such as Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, causing massive damage.

“This is one of the worst flood events we’ve witnessed in recent years,” said Ibrahim Inga, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

Warnings Ignored?

In the weeks leading up to the disaster, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued warnings about heavy storms in central Nigeria, including Niger State. However, many believe there was a failure in translating these alerts into action on the ground.

A similar event in April due to water release from the Jebba Hydroelectric Dam had already caused flooding in 30 communities.

National Impact and Government Response

The Mokwa flood forms part of a broader national crisis. So far, over 155 lives have been lost across Nigeria in 2025 due to flooding, affecting more than 1,200 communities.

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to fast-track relief efforts. Supplies and aid are being distributed, but many are still in urgent need of shelter and food.

Community Voices and Call for Action

“I lost everything — my house, my farm, even my goats,” said Abubakar Mohammed, a 42-year-old farmer in Mokwa.

Local leaders are calling for urgent investment in flood defenses, embankments, and climate resilience infrastructure.
