AKTH Reports Confirmed Lassa Fever Infection
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano has confirmed a case of Lassa fever in the state, raising concerns about potential spread. The hospital’s Infection and Prevention Unit spokesperson, Salisu Inuwa, disclosed that two suspected cases were initially identified.
One patient died before samples could be collected for laboratory analysis, while the other tested positive for the viral hemorrhagic fever. The confirmed case was reported on April 5 in Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
Emergency Response Measures Implemented
Following the confirmed case, AKTH immediately activated emergency protocols. Hospital staff screened all individuals who may have had contact with the infected patient. Some healthcare workers reported mild, malaria-like symptoms, leading to additional testing.
“We’ve collected blood samples from all potential contacts and sent them for laboratory analysis,” Inuwa stated. He noted that some contacts exhibited symptoms resembling malaria, which can be similar to early-stage Lassa fever.
Situation Under Control, Public Reassured
Hospital authorities assured the public that the situation remains under control. None of the individuals under observation have required hospitalization, and all continue their daily activities while being closely monitored.
“All contacts and observed individuals are stable. No admissions have been necessary,” Inuwa confirmed.
The Kano State Ministry of Health has been notified and has deployed a contact tracing team to Garun Mallam to contain potential spread in the community.
