Former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has publicly criticized Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf’s handling of a recent case involving two abandoned children found sleeping on the streets.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Ahmad acknowledged the governor’s initial compassionate response – rescuing the children and providing them shelter at the Government House. However, he strongly condemned the subsequent decision to invite the children’s neglectful parents for a photo session.

“The right moment to send a strong message to negligent parents was lost,” Ahmad wrote. “Instead of holding them accountable for abandoning their responsibilities, they were seemingly rewarded.”

Potential Consequences of the Approach

Ahmad warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent, potentially encouraging other parents to abandon their children near government facilities in hopes of receiving similar treatment from what he sarcastically described as a “very kind” governor.

The former presidential aide also criticized attempts to silence those questioning the governor’s decision, emphasizing that public accountability is crucial for addressing deep-rooted social issues like child neglect, particularly in northern Nigeria.
