Security Failure in Kebbi: DSS Warning Ignored Before School Abduction

KEBBI STATE – A critical intelligence failure has emerged following the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, with security operatives allegedly abandoning their posts just 30 minutes before the attack despite receiving specific warnings from Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS).

Intelligence Breakdown

Kebbi State Governor Mohammed Nasir Idris confirmed Monday night that security agencies received credible DSS intelligence predicting the school attack and recommending immediate protective measures. “This is clear sabotage,” Governor Idris stated during his visit to the attacked school. “We got credible intelligence from the DSS that this school was likely to be attacked. DSS further advised that we convene an emergency Security Council meeting, which we did.”

The governor emphasized that he took the warning seriously, particularly recalling how similar intelligence failures contributed to the December 2020 abduction of over 300 students in Kankara, Katsina State.

Security Withdrawal Precedes Attack

According to multiple sources, heavily-armed security personnel were deployed to the school following the DSS warning and spent Sunday night guarding the premises. Witness accounts describe security personnel interacting with students and teachers, even conducting emergency drills.

However, in what teachers described as a “shocking” development, the security team withdrew from the school approximately 30 minutes before dawn. The kidnappers struck shortly after their departure, abducting 25 female students and killing the vice principal. Three students managed to escape during the incident.

Investigation Launched

Governor Idris has established a special investigation panel headed by the DSS State Director for Kebbi to determine how the attack occurred despite the advanced warning and security preparations. The panel will also oversee efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted students.

“The accuracy and credibility of the intelligence supplied by the DSS on the school made Governor Idris appoint their director to head the special committee,” a security source familiar with the investigation told reporters.

Broader Security Implications

This incident raises serious questions about inter-agency coordination and intelligence implementation in Nigeria’s security apparatus. The apparent disregard for specific DSS warnings suggests either systemic communication failures or deliberate negligence within the security chain of command.

Security analysts note that the pattern of school attacks in northern Nigeria continues despite increased intelligence capabilities, pointing to fundamental operational challenges that require urgent addressing at both state and federal levels.
