Kebbi School Attack Sparks National Security Crisis as Atiku Demands Urgent Action
Kebbi State, Nigeria – The attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga has ignited fresh concerns about Nigeria’s escalating security crisis, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar calling for immediate government intervention to address the nation’s deteriorating safety situation.
School Attack Highlights Worsening Insecurity
The early Monday assault on the educational institution resulted in the death of the school’s Vice-Principal and the abduction of numerous female students, marking another devastating attack on Nigeria’s education system. A school guard was also injured during the violent incident.
In a strongly worded statement, Atiku Abubakar expressed his devastation over the attack, describing it as “yet another reminder of the worsening insecurity in our nation.” The former presidential candidate emphasized that such “acts of barbarity have no place in a civilised society.”
Pattern of Violence Spreads Across Multiple States
The Kebbi school attack represents just one incident in a broader pattern of violence affecting multiple regions. Atiku also condemned the killing of All Progressive Congress chieftain Umar Moriki and mass abductions in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where entire families including women and children were kidnapped.
The security crisis extends beyond northwestern states, with continuing violence reported in Plateau, Benue, and other regions. According to Atiku’s assessment, many communities are “being torn apart” by the persistent insecurity, while residents of Shanono LGA in Kano State are reportedly fleeing their homes out of fear.
Security Forces Launch Rescue Operations
In response to the school attack, the Nigeria Police Force and military have initiated intensive search-and-rescue operations to recover the abducted students. Tactical units deployed to the school engaged the assailants in a gun duel, though the bandits had already escaped with the students to an unknown location.
Operatives from the police command’s tactical unit, in collaboration with military and other security agencies, have been deployed to comb bandit routes and nearby forests in efforts to rescue the students and apprehend the perpetrators.
Calls for Comprehensive Security Overhaul
Atiku issued a direct appeal to the Federal Government, stating: “Nigeria cannot continue on this path. I call on the Federal Government to urgently review and strengthen its security architecture, deploy adequate personnel across vulnerable communities, and intensify intelligence-led operations.”
He emphasized that Nigerian citizens “deserve protection, dignity, and peace—nothing less,” highlighting the growing public frustration with the security situation that has reached what he described as “an intolerable level.”
Broader Implications for Education and Stability
The attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School raises serious concerns about the safety of educational institutions in conflict-affected regions. Such incidents not only disrupt education but create lasting trauma for students, families, and communities, potentially undermining long-term development goals.
CP Bello M. Sani, Commissioner of Police for Kebbi State Command, has reiterated the command’s “unwavering determination to safeguard the lives and property of residents” while appealing for public calm and continued support for police operations.
