NDLEA’s Marwa Hailed as ‘Trailblazer’ by Alaafin of Oyo Following Second Term Appointment

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has extended formal congratulations to General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) on his reappointment as Executive Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), describing the seasoned administrator as “a trailblazer” whose career exemplifies integrity and results-driven leadership.

A Legacy of Conscientious Leadership

In a congratulatory message delivered through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the traditional ruler characterized Marwa as “a man with strong sense of conscientiousness” known for his “scrupulous, punctual, reliable, dependable, purposeful, organized, strong-willed and highly determined character.”

The endorsement from one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional institutions comes at a critical juncture for the nation’s drug control efforts, highlighting the broad-based support for Marwa’s transformative approach to narcotics enforcement.

From State Governance to National Security

The Alaafin’s message traced Marwa’s administrative capabilities to his early governance roles, noting his tenure as Military Governor of old Borno State from 1990 to 1992, where he faced significant security challenges from cross-border raids by dislodged Chadian Army elements.

“The marauders’ pillaging of towns, villages and communities was not unlike Boko Haram’s,” Oba Owoade recalled, drawing historical parallels to contemporary security threats.

During his subsequent administration as Military Administrator of Lagos State (1996-1999), Marwa implemented strategic programs including “Operation 250 Roads” that improved infrastructure and “Operation Sweep” – a joint police and military initiative credited with significantly reducing the state’s notorious crime rate.

Transformative Impact at NDLEA

Since his appointment to lead the NDLEA in January 2021, following his chairmanship of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse (2018-2020), Marwa has overseen what many consider the agency’s most productive period.

The statistics speak to this transformation: between January and July 2021 alone, the NDLEA intercepted and destroyed illicit drugs worth over N60 billion – an unprecedented achievement that demonstrates the agency’s renewed operational effectiveness under Marwa’s leadership.

National Recognition and Future Challenges

Marwa’s career has been marked by consistent recognition, including being named “Nigeria’s Man of the Year 1997” by Newswatch magazine and receiving the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2003.

The Alaafin concluded his message with prayers for “long life, good health, and prosperity” for Marwa as he faces the “arduous task ahead” in his second term leading Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

This endorsement from traditional leadership underscores the multidimensional support for Marwa’s approach to public service, blending security expertise with developmental governance as Nigeria confronts complex drug-related challenges.
