IGP Deploys Special Squad to Combat Rising Banditry and Insecurity in Nigeria
In response to escalating violent attacks across Nigeria, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has announced the immediate deployment of a special squad to tackle banditry and other criminal activities.
Urgent Measures Against Rising Violence
The announcement came during a crucial meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, coinciding with deadly bandit attacks that claimed 21 lives in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States.
The IG issued a directive requiring all PMF squadrons to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby. This move follows a surge in violent attacks across Plateau, Benue, Enugu, and other regions in recent weeks.
Operational Directives and Restructuring
Addressing commanders, Egbetokun emphasized: “The PMF was created as a strike force – to be swift, decisive and combat-ready. Effective immediately, all PMF squadrons are directed to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times.”

The IG outlined specific operational expectations:

- Quarterly training sessions focusing on ethics and professionalism
- Restructuring of PMF units for enhanced efficiency
Withdrawal from Non-Core Duties
Egbetokun reiterated the ongoing withdrawal of mobile policemen from escort duties, stating: “A firm but gradual withdrawal from non-core assignments is underway. The priority now is to refocus our strength towards combating violent crimes and safeguarding national security.”
The police boss warned against indiscipline, emphasizing: “The Nigeria Police Force will no longer allow the values, standards and discipline that once defined the police mobile force to be undermined.”
