Zamfara Governor Vows Enhanced Police Support in Renewed Push to End Banditry
In a decisive move to combat the persistent security challenges plaguing his state, Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal has pledged his administration’s full commitment to bolstering police operations and improving officer welfare.
The governor made this declaration on Monday during a courtesy visit from the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, and his delegation at the Government House in Gusau.
A Partnership for Security
Governor Lawal emphasized his administration’s readiness for deeper collaboration with police forces to enhance security across Zamfara. The NPTF team’s visit centered on inspecting newly constructed special forces barracks funded by the Trust Fund, highlighting the ongoing infrastructure improvements.
“My administration is making a conscious effort to ensure the welfare of the police is guaranteed,” Lawal stated. “That is why we are currently renovating the Zamfara police headquarters. We are also constructing new structures at the Zamfara Mobile Command. We have achieved a lot there, and we plan to do more.”
Addressing Systemic Challenges
The governor expressed deep concern about the nationwide state of police facilities, describing the conditions as unacceptable for an institution expected to deliver effective security services. Drawing from his experience on the Presidential Committee on Police Reform, Lawal revealed disturbing insights from recent inspections of police colleges and staff facilities.
“It is heartbreaking when you see the condition of the police and still expect them to perform miracles,” he lamented. “I am one of those advocating for a complete overhaul of police welfare if we truly want them to perform effectively.”
Concrete Steps Forward
Demonstrating his commitment to tangible solutions, Governor Lawal immediately directed the state’s Commissioner for Housing to collaborate with the NPTF to identify and transfer suitable land for a proposed police housing estate in Zamfara.
“We will identify suitable land to be transferred to the Police Trust Fund so they can move forward with the project,” Lawal assured. “We will provide the land immediately.”
In his earlier remarks, NPTF Executive Secretary Mohammed Sheidu commended the governor for his consistent cooperation and substantial support to the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in enhancing welfare and infrastructure within Zamfara State.
This strengthened partnership between the state government and police authorities signals a renewed determination to tackle the banditry crisis that has affected Zamfara’s stability and development.
