Zamfara APC Accuses PDP of Judicial Witch-Hunt Against Lawmakers

APC Raises Concerns Over Alleged Political Targeting
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has raised serious concerns over what it describes as judicial witch-hunting of nine elected lawmakers by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP, however, has denied any involvement, stating that the matter is strictly between the Zamfara State House of Assembly and its members.
APC’s Allegations
Malam Yusuf Idris, the APC Publicity Secretary, expressed dismay over the state government’s alleged use of the judiciary to target constitutionally elected members of the state House of Assembly. He claimed that the lawmakers were being persecuted for performing their legislative duties and highlighting executive shortcomings in governance.
Idris further alleged that Chief Magistrate Halima Jaafar Mikaila issued an arrest warrant against the lawmakers without prior summons, despite an ongoing case at the Court of Appeal in Sokoto. The APC has described the magistrate’s order as politically motivated.
PDP’s Response
In response, PDP Publicity Secretary Alhaji Halliru Andi clarified that Governor Dauda Lawal had no role in the legal proceedings against the lawmakers. He emphasized the separation of powers, stating, “The Governor neither initiated nor influenced the court’s decision. It is important to respect the independence of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.”
Background of the Dispute
Speaker Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Muhammad Moriki had earlier noted that the case involving the lawmakers was under judicial review, with a court order to maintain the status quo. He declared their parallel assembly illegal following their suspension in February 2024.
APC’s Next Steps
The APC has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant authorities over the matter. The party has also urged the affected lawmakers to file a complaint with the Judicial Service Commission against the magistrate’s order.
“The APC will continue to stand on the right side of the law and resist any attempt to politicize the judiciary,” Idris stated. He vowed that the party would oppose any witch-hunt against lawmakers who speak out on security challenges in their constituencies—issues the state government has allegedly failed to address.
Security Concerns in Zamfara
Zamfara State has been grappling with severe insecurity, with millions displaced due to banditry. The PDP has called on the APC to verify facts and collaborate for peace, reiterating Governor Lawal’s commitment to justice and inclusive governance.
