Journalist Exposes Malicious Campaign Against NiMet Director-General
Abuja-based journalist and publisher Bonaventure Melah has strongly denounced what he describes as a coordinated media smear campaign against Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) Director-General Prof. Charles Anosike.
False Allegations and Misleading Reports
In a statement titled “Who Is Afraid of Prof. Anosike’s Bold Footprints at NiMet?” released on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Melah characterized recent online reports linking Anosike to contract fraud as deliberately misleading attempts to tarnish his reputation.
Melah clarified that three online platforms had published false stories claiming the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was investigating Anosike regarding multi-billion naira contracts awarded in 2021 – two years before his December 2023 appointment as NiMet DG.
EFCC Inquiry Clarified
The journalist explained that the EFCC’s inquiry, which was addressed to NiMet’s Procurement and Human Resources department heads, simply requested documentation related to 2021 contracts and travel records – with no specific mention or implication of Anosike’s involvement.
Melah criticized the misleading headlines as dishonest journalism, noting that one outlet had even republished the story verbatim after NiMet issued an official rebuttal.
Recognized Leadership and Achievements
The publisher warned against what he called “pull-him-down” tactics aimed at frustrating visionary leaders. He highlighted Anosike’s transformative impact at NiMet, including:
- Implementation of the e-flight folder system for automated weather reporting
- Improved early flood warning systems that reduced flooding impacts
- Payment of 2019 minimum wage arrears to staff
- Training for over 1,000 employees in 2024
Anosike’s leadership has earned him two prestigious awards in 2025, including the African Public Sector Leadership Impact Award.
Internal Challenges and Call for Support
Citing labour expert Wakili El-Habib, Melah acknowledged some internal resistance from certain labour leaders within the agency. He urged Nigerians to reject baseless smear campaigns and support Anosike, whose 25-year career in academia and private sectors demonstrates his qualifications for the position.
Melah emphasized that Anosike’s appointment was merit-based and that his leadership has significantly advanced NiMet’s capabilities and service delivery.
