PDP Reaffirms Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary, Pushes for Southern Presidency in 2027
The resolution was announced in Abuja after a high-level closed-door meeting of concerned leaders and party loyalists from across Nigeria. The decision comes amidst ongoing leadership disputes and is intended to reinforce internal party democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike Reads Communiqué, Backs Supreme Court Judgment
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike delivered the communiqué, stating that the reaffirmation was aligned with the Supreme Court’s decision and relevant sections of the PDP Constitution — notably Sections 36(1), 47(3)(5), and 48(1)(i).
“Any actions, correspondences, or notices not issued by Senator Anyanwu are null and void,” Wike said. He emphasized that Anyanwu is the only person authorized to summon key party meetings, including the NEC, NWC, and National Convention.
PDP Crisis and the Road to Reconciliation
Wike warned that the party risked “self-annihilation” if it failed to address ongoing internal strife caused by a few members flouting the party’s constitution. He noted that the divisions had weakened the PDP’s influence and urged members to align with constitutional and legal provisions.
The stakeholders pledged full support for the National Reconciliation Committee chaired by Senator Bukola Saraki, aimed at unifying factions and rebuilding trust within the party.
Call for Southern Presidential Candidate in 2027
In a bold political statement, the stakeholders called for the PDP to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. According to the communiqué, this decision aligns with federal character principles, equity, and the spirit of inclusion following President Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms as a northern candidate.
“This is in the interest of national unity and fairness,” Wike added. The call is expected to shape the PDP’s strategy and internal power balance as preparations begin for the next election cycle.

Notable attendees at the meeting included:
- Senator Sam Anyanwu – PDP National Secretary
- Senator Philip Aduda – Former Senate Minority Leader
- Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi – Former Governor of Enugu State
- Governor Samuel Ortom – Former Governor of Benue State

Next Steps for the PDP
The stakeholders concluded by urging party unity, adherence to constitutional processes, and resistance to destabilizing efforts. They emphasized the importance of reconnecting with grassroots supporters and rebuilding the PDP’s image as a credible opposition platform.
As the PDP positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections, Monday’s resolutions may prove pivotal in redefining the party’s direction and internal cohesion.
