Niger State Begins N7 Billion Mokwa-Rabba Road Project After Deadly Floods
Floods Claim Lives, Destroy Property
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recent flooding in Mokwa led to the loss of lives and the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and farmlands worth millions of naira. The governor expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and pledged immediate intervention.
“This is a time to stay united,” Bago told residents. “We will not abandon you. Government is taking active steps to mitigate future occurrences.”
Infrastructure Response: Immediate Road Work to Begin
Governor Bago confirmed that the road construction will begin without delay. The project is seen as a crucial infrastructure boost, designed to not only improve connectivity but also to offer a resilient pathway in the face of future disasters.
“We are building not just roads, but lifelines that will safeguard our communities,” the governor emphasized during the site assessment.
Relocation Plans to Avoid Future Disasters
The governor has instructed all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to conduct comprehensive surveys of waterways and topography across the state. The goal is to identify flood-prone zones and initiate a plan to relocate residents from coastal areas most at risk of recurring disasters.
Bago stated that such efforts are part of a long-term environmental risk management strategy to protect lives and property in Niger State.
Relief Distribution and Community Engagement
During his visit, the governor supervised the symbolic distribution of relief materials to select households affected by the floods. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all affected families receive timely support and resources to rebuild their lives.
The governor also toured Rabba, where a bridge had been cut off by the floods, further disrupting movement. He assured the local population that the new project would restore normalcy and ease economic activities in the region.
