Nigeria’s Military Adopts CNG Vehicles in Push for Sustainable Security Operations
Defence Minister Calls for Innovation in Tackling Security Challenges
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has urged military leaders to implement forward-thinking strategies that emphasize innovation, sustainability, and operational efficiency in combating Nigeria’s complex security threats.
Landmark Transition to Clean Energy
Speaking during the commissioning of over 80 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles for the Defence Headquarters at Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja, Matawalle described the initiative as a pivotal moment in military logistics reform. “This transition to cleaner energy marks the beginning of systemic change in our energy use and environmental responsibility,” he stated.
The vehicles, converted under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (Pi-CNG), are projected to significantly reduce fuel costs, lower carbon emissions, and enhance operational effectiveness across all branches of the armed forces.
Infrastructure Development Crucial for Success
Matawalle emphasized the need for complementary infrastructure, urging military leadership to:
- Establish CNG fueling stations across military bases
- Implement comprehensive personnel training programs
- Develop maintenance protocols for the new vehicle fleet
The Defence Minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to policies that simultaneously strengthen national security while supporting Nigeria’s economic and environmental objectives.
Military Leadership Endorses Sustainable Approach
Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, praised the initiative as aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “CNG offers a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels, bringing our logistics strategy in line with global best practices,” Musa remarked.
Major General John Ochigbano, Chief of Defence Logistics, highlighted the broader significance of the transition: “This move represents a fundamental shift in Nigeria’s transportation and energy base from petrol to natural gas.”
Security Forces Achieve Major Counterterrorism Success
In related security developments, Operation Hadin Kai troops eliminated at least 10 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during a coordinated assault in Borno State’s southern Lake Chad region.
According to Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the operation near the Cameroon border resulted in:
- Significant terrorist casualties
- Recovery of substantial weapons cache
- Retrieval of anti-aircraft rounds allegedly stolen from Cameroonian forces
Police Crackdown on Kidnapping Networks
Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command achieved a major breakthrough with the arrest of three high-profile kidnappers operating across Abuja and Kaduna. The suspects, identified as:
- Abdulkadir Abubakar (Mpape, FCT)
