Enugu, Nigeria – Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has paid glowing tribute to the late former Super Eagles captain Christian Chukwu, describing him as a national hero whose legacy will endure forever.
During a condolence visit to the Chukwu family in Enugu, Gusau (represented by NFF First Vice President Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu) praised Chukwu’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian football both as a player and coach.
“The late Chukwu gave his all for the country. He served Nigeria with all his heart, and he is a hero even in death. One thing is clear: Chukwu can never be forgotten, given how well he served the country and his achievements both as a player and as a coach,” Gusau stated.
NFF Commits to Full Participation in Burial Rites
The NFF President emphasized that their visit went beyond condolences, with the Federation seeking to align with the family’s plans for Chukwu’s final rites. “We want to be on the same page with the family and know what plans they are putting in place. Chukwu is a hero, and the NFF will participate fully in his burial,” he added.
Chukwu’s son, Emeka, expressed the family’s appreciation for the NFF’s support, noting that burial details would be announced soon.
Distinguished Career Remembered
Christian Chukwu, who passed away at 74, captained Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. His leadership both on and off the field made him one of Nigeria’s most respected football figures.
The NFF delegation included several prominent football administrators, demonstrating the widespread respect for Chukwu’s legacy across Nigeria’s football community.
