NSCDC Arrests Suspect for Alleged N159 Million Travel Scam Targeting Pastor and 65 Others
Ekiti Command Takes Swift Action Against Visa Fraud Scheme
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti State has made a significant breakthrough in combating financial fraud, arresting and prosecuting Abigail Brains Timothy for allegedly orchestrating a sophisticated travel document scam. The suspect stands accused of defrauding a clergyman and 65 other victims under false pretenses of securing international visas and work permits.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
According to official statements from NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Tolulope, authorities apprehended the suspect in Benin City on May 25, 2025, following multiple complaints from defrauded individuals. The investigation revealed that Timothy specifically targeted Pastor Adewusi Tibatope Samuel, exploiting his trust and network of contacts.
“The suspect allegedly deceived Pastor Adewusi by falsely claiming she possessed both the capacity and connections to process visas and work permits for 65 individuals whom the pastor had introduced as clients,” Afolabi explained in the detailed release.
Modus Operandi of the Scam
The fraudulent scheme operated through a carefully constructed deception. Over an extended period, the suspect convinced her victims to transfer substantial funds, purportedly covering official visa fees and work permit costs. NSCDC’s State Intelligence and Investigation Department conducted thorough inquiries that confirmed the suspect’s fraudulent intent with no genuine capacity to deliver on her promises.
“Findings conclusively demonstrated that the suspect acted with deliberate intent to defraud, lacking any legitimate means or intention to fulfill the immigration and employment arrangements she advertised,” the statement emphasized.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Case
Following comprehensive investigations, the NSCDC has formally charged the case to court. The matter is currently before the Ado-Ekiti Judicial Division, with the court ordering the suspect’s detention at the Correctional Centre pending trial continuation.
The Ekiti NSCDC has reaffirmed its dedication to rigorous prosecution aligned with Nigerian federal laws, emphasizing proper handling of suspects in accordance with constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.
NSCDC’s Broader Commitment to Public Safety
The Corps used the opportunity to highlight its expanded security mandate, stating: “The NSCDC Ekiti State Command maintains unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and critical national infrastructure. We remain equally focused on prosecuting all forms of economic crimes including illegal mining and pipeline vandalism within our operational jurisdiction.”
The statement also noted the Corps’ conflict resolution capabilities, mentioning trained Peace and Conflict experts available to mediate disputes among community members.
Public Advisory Against Fraud
Ekiti State Commandant Matthew Enya issued stern warnings to citizens regarding fraudulent travel agents, advising: “The public must exercise extreme caution when dealing with individuals claiming to be travel or visa agents. We urge prompt reporting of suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to jungle justice or self-help measures.”
This case highlights growing concerns about sophisticated fraud schemes targeting Nigerians seeking international opportunities. Authorities emphasize the importance of verifying agent credentials through official channels before making any financial commitments.
