Gateway Games 2024 Set to Showcase Nigeria’s Sporting Talent
Vice President Kashim Shettima will officially declare open the 22nd National Sports Festival, popularly known as the “Gateway Games,” this Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The announcement came during the official festival kit presentation ceremony held in Abuja on Friday.
Massive Participation Expected
The week-long sporting extravaganza will feature over 10,000 athletes representing all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and a special team of young talents competing as the “38th state.” This edition marks one of the most comprehensive festivals in history with 33 different sports disciplines.
According to National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko, “The National Sports Festival serves as a crucial platform for talent discovery and national unity through sports.” The Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) team will particularly highlight Nigeria’s promising future champions across various events.
Cultural Extravaganza and Competition Venues
Beyond athletic competitions, the festival will celebrate Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity through:
- Traditional music and dance performances
- Art exhibitions
- Cultural pageantry
Key competition venues include:
- Alake Sports Centre
- MKO Abiola Sports Complex
- Remo Stars Stadium
Babock University will serve as the Games Village, providing accommodation for athletes and officials throughout the event.
