Baba-Ahmed Advises Tinubu Against 2027 Re-election Bid, Urges Focus on Mentoring Successor

Former Presidential Aide Calls for Leadership Renewal in Nigeria

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Vice President, has publicly advised President Bola Tinubu against seeking re-election in 2027, suggesting instead that he focus on grooming a younger successor.

In a significant intervention in Nigeria’s political discourse, Baba-Ahmed recommended that President Tinubu dedicate his remaining tenure to addressing national challenges while identifying and mentoring a dynamic new leader for the country.

A Call for Generational Transition

“If I had met with President Tinubu, I would have told him not to run in 2027 and to back a younger candidate,” Baba-Ahmed stated. “There are better things he could do than being president. He could spend the next two years doing the things he ought to do that he hasn’t done yet or improving on what he has done.”

The political strategist emphasized the need for fresh leadership, saying: “Look for a younger person who is more energetic, healthier, more focused, and more committed to the future of this country.”

Prioritizing National Development

Baba-Ahmed outlined what he believes should be Tinubu’s priorities: “Spend the next two years fixing Nigeria, fix the economy, and security.” He added that there are many patriotic Nigerians eager to contribute to the nation’s future who should be given opportunities to lead.

“Test them with power because you have done your bit. You don’t need to run for another one,” he advised the President.

Fueling National Debate

These remarks contribute to growing discussions about political succession and leadership renewal in Nigeria as the country looks toward the 2027 elections. The suggestion comes amid ongoing challenges facing the nation and increasing calls for innovative solutions to complex problems.
