The Tragic Incident
The case dates back to February 26, 2022, when Ominikoron, then a driver for Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), allegedly committed the heinous crime. The victim had boarded his bus at the Ajah axis of Lagos before her disappearance sparked widespread outrage.
Charges and Evidence
Ominikoron faced five serious charges including conspiracy to commit felony, rape, murder, and sexual assault. The prosecution built their case on compelling evidence, including:
- The “last seen” doctrine placing Bamise with the defendant
- The victim’s dying declaration
- Forensic evidence linking Ominikoron to the crime
Discovery and Public Outcry
Nine days after her disappearance, Bamise’s lifeless body was discovered on Carter Bridge in Lagos Island. The case drew national attention and renewed calls for improved public transportation safety measures.
Judge’s Final Ruling
Justice Sherifat Sonaike pronounced the death sentence, stating: “For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you.” The judge emphasized that the prosecution had successfully proven their case beyond reasonable doubt.
