25 Killed in Enugu State as Insurgent Attacks Escalate in Uzo-Uwani
Violence Forces Mass Displacement in Nigeria’s Agricultural Heartland
Abuja – At least 25 people have been killed and numerous others injured in a surge of violent attacks by suspected herdsmen in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria’s key agricultural region.
Communities Under Siege
The escalating violence has forced terrified families to flee to neighboring Anambra and Kogi states, while those remaining live in constant fear of further attacks. The region, known as Enugu’s food basket, faces growing instability that threatens both lives and food security.
Security Failures Exposed
Godwin Ezugwu, a local vigilante member, condemned the inadequate security response, revealing shocking details of recent atrocities:
- Machete killing of vigilante Chijioke Anioke at Ekenwaozege junction
- Murder of Nwa Black in Opanda, Adani
- Kidnapping of ENTRACO driver Patty Ozor with one passenger killed
Ezugwu criticized Enugu’s new Police Commissioner Mamman Bitrus Giwa for recently denying security problems in the area.
Community Leaders Sound Alarm
Local leaders have issued an urgent plea to Governor Peter Mbah, expressing frustration with Uzo-Uwani LGA Chairman Chijioke Ezugwu’s inaction. Reports indicate:
- Persistent farmer abductions and killings over two months
- DSS Director General warning of Fulani attacks on Southern Nigeria
- Calls for communities to arm themselves for self-defense
Ignored Security Proposals
The situation has been compounded by the state government’s alleged disregard for a 2024 security summit proposed by Senator Chuka Utazi and Uzo-Uwani Professionals in Nsukka, raising concerns about addressing the growing insurgency.
