Edo Fraudster Turns Himself In to EFCC, Confesses to Romance Scams
A 28-year-old internet fraudster from Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State has renounced his criminal activities and surrendered to authorities.
Fear of Arrest Leads to Surrender
The remorseful cybercriminal cited fear of arrest as his primary motivation for abandoning his illegal lifestyle. According to a Friday statement from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the unnamed Edo indigene voluntarily reported to the Benin Zonal Directorate.
Official Confession
EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, quoted the repentant fraudster: “I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf.”
Modus Operandi Revealed
The statement detailed how the fraudster specialized in romance scams targeting foreign victims. His scheme involved:
- Posing as a Chinese medical doctor in a war-torn country
- Using messaging apps with translation features to communicate in Chinese
- Exploiting victims through flattery and false declarations of love
Detailed Confession
The fraudster admitted: “I tell my victims that I am from China and that I work as a medical doctor in a war-torn country. I communicate with them in Chinese using a mobile app translator. I profess love for them by telling them how beautiful and attractive they are.”
The Acting Zonal Director, Assistant Commander Effam Okim, received the suspect at the Benin Zonal Directorate.
