PDP Dismisses Concerns Over Opposition Coalition, Confident of 2027 Victory
Abuja, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong confidence in its ability to reclaim power in the 2027 general elections, dismissing recent political maneuvers by opposition groups as inconsequential.
PDP Leadership Addresses Coalition Concerns
During Thursday’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum addressed growing speculation about a coalition of opposition parties adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform.
“I must address the matter of a so-called coalition recently formed, which includes some defecting members of our party,” Damagum stated. “On this issue, I am pleased to report that this political experiment is nothing to lose sleep over.”
Party’s Unshaken Position
Damagum emphasized the PDP’s enduring strength, highlighting its nationwide structure and historical significance in Nigerian politics. “They say a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Some people have recently learned this truth in the most uncomfortable way,” he remarked.
The chairman revealed that many who initially joined the coalition had already returned to the PDP fold. “Some even claimed they never left and merely attended a meeting; we accept their confessions without prejudice,” he added.
Governors’ Forum Weighs In
Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, echoed Damagum’s sentiments while adopting a more conciliatory tone toward defectors.
“This is not the time for calling names. This is not the time for abuses,” Mohammed stated. “We sympathize with those who became impatient and left, but certainly they will understand and we will still leave the door ajar for them to come in when they wish to, within a time limit.”
Party Discipline and Future Prospects
Mohammed stressed the importance of maintaining party discipline, acknowledging it as crucial to overcoming current challenges. “We will not continue to condone indiscipline in this party, because indiscipline is what brought us these challenges,” he said.
The governor commended members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for their flexibility, noting their willingness to step down before their terms ended. “They have shown that at least they are with us and we should always appreciate that, because if everyone becomes dogmatic, we are not going to where we want,” Mohammed added.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Both leaders projected confidence about the PDP’s prospects in the next general elections. Damagum particularly noted that the coalition’s struggles weren’t limited to former PDP members: “Individuals from other political parties who initially joined this coalition have realized that the venture is ill-fated and their swift return is proof of this.”
The PDP’s unified message suggests a party preparing to capitalize on opposition disarray while working to reintegrate former members under disciplined conditions.
