PDP National Convention to Proceed as Scheduled, Declares Governor Fintiri

In a decisive move to quell speculation, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Organizing Convention Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has confirmed that the party’s national convention will proceed as planned this weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Governor Fintiri addressed journalists after a marathon stakeholders’ meeting that stretched for several hours, firmly stating that the date for the convention is sacrosanct and will not be altered.

Stakeholders Unite Behind Elective Convention

The emergency meeting, convened at the Bauchi State Governors Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, brought together a powerful cross-section of the party’s leadership. Attendees included members of the National Working Committee, serving and former governors, National Assembly members, Board of Trustees (BOT) members, and state party chairmen.

Sources within the meeting revealed a significant debate over the party’s direction. While former Senate President Bukola Saraki reportedly advocated for the appointment of a caretaker committee to lead the party, a majority of stakeholders pushed for an elective convention, reinforcing the democratic process within the PDP.

Navigating Internal Divisions

The convention’s path has been complicated by internal factions. The party has been divided between a group led by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and another led by Ambassador Umar Damagum.

In a twist emblematic of the party’s current challenges, the Wike faction had sought legal intervention to halt the convention, only to be met with a counter-lawsuit from the Damagum group aiming to reverse the court’s decision. This legal tug-of-war underscores the high stakes involved in the upcoming leadership selection.

With the convention now confirmed to proceed, all eyes will be on Ibadan as the PDP seeks to solidify its leadership and present a united front ahead of future electoral contests.
