Workers’ Day: NLC Demands Full Employment of Casual Staff in Akwa Ibom
Labour Union Calls for Integration of Over 1,000 Casual Workers
The Akwa Ibom Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the state government to fully integrate over 1,000 casual workers into the civil service, ensuring they earn decent wages. The appeal was made during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration by the state NLC chairperson, Comrade Sunny James.
Violation of Labour Standards
James expressed concern that some ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) continue to employ casual workers, contravening international labour standards. He emphasized that this practice must be abolished in Akwa Ibom.
Vacancies Identified After Verification
Following a verification exercise ordered by Governor Umo Eno, over 2,000 workers failed to present themselves, leaving vacancies in several ministries. James stated, “Those casual workers should be considered for employment now that we have identified those who failed to show up.”
Additional Labour Demands
The NLC also appealed for the promotion of 6,600 workers awaiting elevation to Grade Level 14, warning that delays could create an unmanageable backlog. Additionally, James raised concerns about encroachment on land allocated for workers and called for government intervention.
Commendation for Governor’s Efforts
James acknowledged Governor Eno’s efforts in clearing pension arrears, gratuities, and leave grants. He also praised the approval of an N80,000 minimum wage and urged private employers to follow suit.
Support for Ibom Deep Seaport Project
The NLC chairperson encouraged the governor to prioritize the Ibom Deep Seaport project, describing it as a transformative initiative capable of creating jobs for thousands of youths.
TUC Praises Digital Economy Ministry
Comrade Dominic Abang, chairperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), commended the governor for establishing the Ministry of Digital Economy, which is expected to enhance civil service efficiency.
Governor’s Commitment to Workers
Governor Umo Eno, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to workers’ welfare. He highlighted the fulfillment of campaign promises to collaborate with labour unions and expressed gratitude for their confidence in his leadership.
