Imported Presidential System Won’t Work in Nigeria – Tony Cole
Tony Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State during the 2023 elections, has argued that Nigeria’s imported presidential system is fundamentally flawed and unsuitable for the country.
A System Designed for Exploitation
Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Cole criticized Nigeria’s governance structure, stating that the current presidential system—modeled after the American system—is prone to hijacking by a privileged few.
“This American system that is called the presidential system in Nigeria—we need to go and address it. We cannot import a parliamentary system from the UK and expect it to work here. We cannot import a presidential system; it will not work here, just as it hasn’t in any other African country,” Cole asserted.
Mismatch with African Realities
He emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic framework contradicts its cultural and institutional realities. “Are we satisfied with the system and democracy we’ve adopted? No, because it is contrary to who we are,” he said.
Cole further explained, “The system can be easily exploited by a few. With this system, you have not built institutions you can hold accountable. The institutions are modeled along the British system, but the British system is not our system.”
Nigeria’s Role in Africa
Cole also highlighted Nigeria’s potential influence on the African continent, stressing that the country must position itself as a strong negotiator in foreign policy.
“If Nigeria gets it right, not only the sub-region but the whole of Africa will begin to pay attention. Nigeria commands influence. But when you are commanding influence, you don’t go begging. You must have a clear stance on what is good for us,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates about governance reforms in Nigeria, with many calling for a system that aligns better with the nation’s socio-political realities.
