Project Reenrolls 30,000 Adolescent Girls in Education

The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sunusi II, has praised the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project for its significant achievements in education across Kano State. The project has successfully reenrolled over 30,000 adolescent girls and renovated more than 1,300 schools.

The Emir made these remarks during an advocacy visit by the AGILE State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) to his palace. He emphasized the Kano Emirate Council’s strong commitment to promoting education, particularly for girls.

Emir Pledges Continued Support for Girls’ Education

Emir Sanusi II pledged the council’s ongoing support to ensure the enrollment, retention, transition, and completion of girls’ education in Kano. He stressed the importance of collaboration in implementing policies and programs that foster state and national development.

The royal leader expressed particular satisfaction with AGILE’s robust monitoring and evaluation framework, which tracks the use of grants and conditional cash transfers.

AGILE’s Impact on Education in Kano

Malam Mujtapha Aminu, Kano State AGILE Coordinator, revealed that more than 100,000 students are currently enrolled in learning centers across 23 local government areas under the project’s second chance education program.

This initiative provides out-of-school adolescent girls with opportunities to complete their secondary education while gaining valuable entrepreneurship and life skills. Students undergo literacy, numeracy, and entrepreneurship training across 5,000 learning centers.

Certification and National Examinations

After nine months of instruction, participants can sit for examinations to receive certificates equivalent to the Junior Secondary School Certificate. Those in advanced literacy programs may also take national examinations like NECO and WAEC.

The AGILE Project is a World Bank-assisted initiative implemented through Federal and State Ministries of Education, aimed at improving secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls in Nigeria.
