In a significant breakthrough against arms trafficking, troops from the 37 Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Demonstration Battalion have apprehended three suspected gunrunners in Kaduna State. The operation, conducted on Thursday, marks another success in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to curb the flow of illegal weapons to criminal elements.

Details of the Operation

Lieutenant Colonel Umar Shuaib, acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 1 Division Nigerian Army, confirmed the arrests in an official statement released on Friday. According to military sources, the operation was based on credible intelligence gathered by security forces.

“The gallant troops of 37 NDA Demonstration Battalion intercepted and arrested three suspected gunrunners along the Kauya-Old Afaka-Sabon Birni Road in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State,” Shuaib stated.

Suspects and Seized Items

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Yakubu Jilbril
  • Abubakar Yahaya
  • Isiya Sani

The suspects were traveling in a black Golf 4 vehicle with registration number Abuja YAB 385 K7 when they were intercepted by military personnel. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a substantial arsenal of weapons and other incriminating items.

Recovered Arms and Evidence

The military spokesperson detailed the extensive inventory of seized materials:

  • 9 AK-47 rifles
  • 389 rounds of 7.62mm (special) live ammunition
  • 54 rounds of 5.56 x 45mm (NATO) ammunition
  • 17 magazines
  • 4 GSM handsets
  • 1 magazine carrier
  • 1 machete
  • Various charms and suspected illicit substances
  • 1 MTN wifi modem
  • Tyre cold patch materials
  • Cash totaling N365,600

Ongoing Investigations

According to Lieutenant Colonel Shuaib, the suspects are currently in military custody undergoing intensive interrogation. “The Nigerian Army wishes to assure law-abiding citizens that it will continue to deny terrorists and their sponsors freedom of action to enhance safety and security in Nigeria,” he emphasized.

Security analysts suggest this interception represents a significant blow to arms smuggling networks operating in Nigeria’s northwest region, which has been plagued by banditry and terrorist activities in recent years.

Broader Security Implications

This successful operation comes amid heightened security operations across northern Nigeria. Military sources indicate that the recovered weapons were likely destined for criminal elements hiding in remote forest areas, where various armed groups have established bases.

The Nigerian military has intensified its campaign against arms trafficking following increased attacks on communities and critical infrastructure in the region. Security experts note that cutting off the supply of weapons to non-state actors remains crucial to restoring peace in affected areas.
