Bandits Kill 7 Passengers in Zamfara Road Ambush, Abduct Others

Zamfara State, Nigeria – Suspected armed bandits launched a deadly attack on Thursday evening, killing at least seven passengers and injuring several others along the Tsafe-Funtua road in Zamfara State. The assault occurred just before the road’s scheduled closure as part of security measures implemented by the state government.
Details of the Attack
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers targeted a commercial vehicle carrying women and children around 7 pm. The bandits, reportedly riding motorcycles, opened fire on the bus as it approached their position.
“The bandits were on motorcycles, crossing the road when they encountered an oncoming commercial bus and opened fire on them,” a source familiar with the incident revealed.
The source added that seven people, including children, were killed instantly in the brutal attack. Passengers from two other vehicles traveling along the same route were allegedly abducted during the ambush.
Security Context in Zamfara
This latest attack comes despite security measures implemented by the Zamfara State Government, including road closures during evening hours to curb the rising incidents of banditry in the region. The Tsafe-Funtua road has become particularly dangerous, with frequent reports of armed assaults on motorists.
Security analysts note that bandit attacks in northwest Nigeria have escalated in recent years, with criminal groups targeting roads, villages, and sometimes schools for mass kidnappings. The region’s vast forests provide cover for these armed groups to operate with relative impunity.
Police Response
At the time of reporting, the Zamfara State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Multiple attempts to reach police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar for comment were unsuccessful.
Local residents have expressed growing frustration with the security situation, calling for more robust measures to protect travelers and communities from bandit attacks.
Humanitarian Impact
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing ordinary Nigerians in the region. Women and children, who made up most of the victims in this incident, are particularly vulnerable to such violent assaults.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for improved security and protection for civilians in Nigeria’s northwest, where banditry has displaced thousands and disrupted economic activities.
As investigations continue, community leaders are urging the government to implement more effective strategies to combat banditry and ensure the safety of travelers on major roads.
