Police Stations Receive Only ₦15,000 Monthly for Operations – NPTF Boss Reveals

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has raised alarm over the severe underfunding of police stations across the country, with each station receiving a meager ₦15,000 monthly for operational costs.
Police Stations Struggle with Inadequate Funding
Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary of the NPTF, disclosed in an interview with The Nation Newspaper that police stations are allocated just ₦45,000 quarterly (₦15,000 monthly) for operational expenses. This amounts to approximately ₦500 per day, which is insufficient to cover basic needs like fuel, electricity, and stationery.
“Police stations are given ₦45,000 quarterly for imprest. If you like, call it running cost or operational cost, it’s ₦45,000 for a quarter. Do the math, per day. So, how much to fuel, to file?” Sheidu lamented.
Officers Work Under Harsh Conditions
Sheidu described Nigerian police officers as “miracle workers” who perform their duties despite severe resource constraints. Many stations lack stable electricity, forcing officers to improvise solutions.

Police Trust Fund Faces Funding Challenges
The NPTF, established to improve police funding, has struggled with inconsistent revenue streams. Sheidu explained:
- 0.5% of FAAC allocations remain disputed in court
- 0.005% of company profits only began flowing in 2022
- Fuel budgets often run out after 4-8 months
Seeking Alternative Solutions
To address these challenges, the NPTF is collaborating with agencies like the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to improve infrastructure at police stations.
Sheidu emphasized the need for systemic reform to ensure proper funding for Nigeria’s police force to enhance security nationwide.
