Nigerian Doctoral Student Wins Prestigious Thesis Competition at US University
Muneer Yaqub Triumphs in University of Texas’ Three Minute Thesis Challenge
A Nigerian doctoral candidate at the University of Texas, Dallas has made his country proud by winning the institution’s prestigious Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
Muneer Yaqub, a final-year PhD student in Molecular and Cell Biology, emerged victorious among 14 shortlisted finalists with his groundbreaking presentation titled “When Antibiotics Fail: Fighting 21st-Century Superbugs with 21st-Century Science.”
For this remarkable achievement, Yaqub was awarded a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to represent the university in higher-level competitions.

- Stephanie Yamauchi (2nd runner-up): “Elucidating The Effects of Chronic Inflammation on Cancer Growth” – $750 prize

About the Three Minute Thesis Competition
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, originally developed by The University of Queensland, challenges PhD students to present complex research in just three minutes using language accessible to non-specialists.
“The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience,” the university stated.
Muneer Yaqub: An Academic Trailblazer
Mr. Yaqub’s academic journey began in Nigeria, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, before moving to the US on a fully funded fellowship.
At the University of Texas, Dallas, he has distinguished himself through:
- Research on highly drug-resistant hospital-acquired pathogens
- Leadership roles including Graduate Student Representative for Biological Sciences
- Pioneering the UTD Global Ambassadors program for international students
