By Molly Kilete, Abuja
Commitment to National Security
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty as it marks its 61st anniversary. The NAF emphasized its critical role in combating insurgency, terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges, urging Nigerians to support ongoing efforts to eliminate these threats.
Operational Successes and Transformation
Air Commodore Sylvester Eyoma, Chairman of the NAF@61 Celebration and 4th International Air Force Forum Organising Committee, highlighted the NAF’s transformation over the past six decades during a media briefing in Abuja. He noted significant improvements in organization, personnel training, and equipment modernization.
“Through precision air strikes, coordinated operations, and advanced surveillance, we have recorded remarkable operational successes,” Eyoma stated. He added that these efforts have effectively disrupted terrorist networks and provided crucial support to ground troops.
Anniversary Theme and Public Engagement
The anniversary theme, “Optimising Civil-Military Relations in a Joint Operational Environment for Enhanced Air Operations,” underscores the importance of public partnership in securing the nation. To foster this relationship, the NAF has organized:
- Open Day Visits and Career Talks at NAF bases from May 1 to May 13, allowing civilians to interact with personnel.
- Quick Impact Projects, including a newly built clinic in Rukubi, Nasarawa State—a response to a January 2023 airstrike tragedy.
Key Events and International Collaboration
President Bola Tinubu will induct the Augusta 109S Trekker Helicopter into the 011 Presidential Air Fleet on Friday, May 10. The celebrations will transition to the 4th African Air Forces Forum on May 22–23 in Lagos, themed “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security.”
The forum is expected to host over 2,000 participants, including representatives from 30 air forces, 12 air chiefs, and 45 exhibitors such as Airbus and Embraer. Discussions will focus on advancements in air power and regional security cooperation.
A Legacy of Dedication
Eyoma concluded by emphasizing that the NAF’s achievements reflect 61 years of dedication to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and fostering regional security partnerships.
