Veteran Rapper Praises New Talent but Stays Confident in His Craft
Jude Abaga, widely known as M.I., has opened up about the new wave of young rappers making significant strides in Nigeria’s hip-hop industry. While acknowledging their talent and hard work, the legendary rapper made it clear that he doesn’t feel overshadowed by their success.
In a recent interview with Jay On Air, M.I., often referred to as “African Rapper No. 1”, shared his thoughts on the current state of Nigerian hip-hop and the emergence of artists like Odumodublvck, Blaqbonez, Shallipopi, Ladipoe, and Falz.
“I’m Not Intimidated by Their Success”
M.I. emphasized that while he admires the new generation of rappers, their achievements don’t make him feel outdated. “The likes of Odumodublvck, Shallipopi, Ladipoe, Falz are the rappers who are currently making waves, but I have not felt like I’m the old guy in terms of skills,” he said.
He further explained his perspective: “For me as an artist, that part doesn’t affect me. What I care about is if you and I were in the studio, am I with somebody who can outrap me?”
Respect for the New Wave
The veteran rapper expressed admiration for the fresh talent in the industry, particularly highlighting Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez. “I love what Odumodu is doing. I love what Blaqbonez is doing. I love their talent, but it doesn’t intimidate me,” he stated.
M.I. also drew a distinction between his career trajectory and that of Nigeria’s biggest Afrobeats stars, saying, “I’m not Davido, I’m not Wizkid; they are in the red-hot moment.”
The Evolution of Nigerian Hip-Hop
M.I.’s comments come at a time when Nigerian hip-hop is experiencing a resurgence, with younger artists blending traditional rap with contemporary Afrobeats influences. His acknowledgment of their talent while maintaining confidence in his own abilities reflects the healthy competition and mutual respect within the industry.
As one of the pioneers of Nigerian rap, M.I. has consistently delivered critically acclaimed music over the years. His latest remarks suggest that while he appreciates the new generation’s contributions, he remains a formidable force in the rap game.
