2027 Election: ADC Alleges Intimidation as Governors Hesitate to Join Opposition Coalition

Political Pressure Mounts Against Opposition Alliance

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made startling revelations about the challenges facing Nigeria’s political opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the party, serving state governors are facing intense pressure that prevents them from joining the growing coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Governors Under Pressure, ADC Claims

Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s national publicity secretary, disclosed this troubling development during the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG) in Abuja. His comments shed light on the alleged political intimidation occurring behind the scenes of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“No serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing,” Abdullahi stated emphatically. “We know what they are doing to them. Some of them who cannot jump to their party are saying we are endorsing their presidential candidate.”

Tinubu Administration Accused of Opposition Suppression

The ADC’s allegations come amid growing concerns about political freedoms in Nigeria. These claims echo similar accusations made by former Jigawa state governor Sule Lamido, who recently alleged that President Tinubu is using state institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intimidate opposition leaders.

Why ADC Became the Coalition’s Choice

The opposition’s decision to rally behind the ADC as their primary platform for the 2027 elections came after extensive consultations among key political figures. The coalition includes prominent leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who have both expressed confidence in the ADC’s potential to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Former Senate President David Mark and ex-minister Rauf Aregbesola were appointed to key positions within the ADC’s leadership structure, signaling the party’s readiness for the upcoming political battle.

Atiku Confident in ADC’s 2027 Prospects

Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has been vocal about the coalition’s ambitions. He recently declared that the ADC would successfully challenge President Tinubu’s hold on power, emphasizing that Nigeria “can never be a one-party state.”

The former vice president pointed to the ADC’s rapid growth since its adoption by the opposition coalition, suggesting the party has already begun making significant inroads across the country’s political landscape.

Democracy Under Threat?

These developments raise important questions about the state of Nigeria’s democracy as the nation approaches another election cycle. The ADC’s allegations, if proven true, could indicate serious challenges to political pluralism and fair electoral competition.

Political analysts suggest that the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the opposition can overcome these alleged obstacles and present a united front against the ruling party.
