The Labour Party’s internal crisis has intensified as its National Executive Council (NEC) announced the suspension of Julius Abure, the embattled former national chairman. The decision, made public on Friday, marks a significant escalation in the party’s leadership dispute.

Legal Violations Prompt Suspension

Nenadi Usman, Caretaker Committee Chairperson, stated that Abure’s suspension follows his persistent defiance of a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated his claim to the party’s leadership. Usman accused Abure of repeatedly flouting legal directives and misrepresenting himself as LP national chairman despite the judicial order nullifying his tenure.

“After a careful and comprehensive review of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025… the NEC… hereby announces the immediate suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from the Labour Party,” Usman declared in the official statement.

Damage to Party Integrity

The NEC described Abure’s actions as severely damaging to the party’s integrity and constitutional processes. Usman emphasized that Abure’s tenure had legally expired, and any continued representation of himself as chairman constituted contempt of the apex court’s ruling.

Escalating Party Conflict

This development follows a controversial move earlier in the week by Abure’s faction, which suspended prominent LP figures including Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Senator Ireti Kingibe. The ongoing power struggle continues to create divisions within the opposition party.
