Deadly Bandit Attack in Kogi Leaves Three Dead, Traditional Ruler Still Captive
Community in Crisis as Violence Escalates
Tensions have reached a boiling point in Okoloke, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, following a brutal attack by suspected bandits that claimed three lives and heightened concerns over the fate of a kidnapped traditional ruler.
Double Tragedy Strikes Okoloke
The violence began when attackers abducted 90-year-old monarch Pa Dada James Ogunyanda from his palace in the early hours of Thursday. The situation worsened on Saturday when the assailants struck again, killing two local vigilantes and a telecommunications worker during an ambush in the bush.
Local sources revealed the victims were inspecting a telecommunications mast when they were attacked, deepening the crisis in the already traumatized community.
Ransom Negotiations and Health Concerns
The kidnappers initially demanded a ₦100 million ransom for the monarch’s release, later reducing it to ₦12 million during negotiations. Of particular concern is the elderly ruler’s fragile health condition, as he requires regular medication. Reports indicate some medications were delivered through a drop-off arrangement with the abductors.
“The bandits provided instructions for delivering the monarch’s medication but launched their attack before the process could be completed,” a resident familiar with the negotiations disclosed.
Community Outcry Over Security Failures
Local resident Olusegun Iselaye took to Facebook to express the community’s frustration, condemning what he described as government inaction and inadequate security measures.
“We are heartbroken and outraged,” Iselaye wrote. “Just days after the kidnapping of our traditional ruler, we have lost three more innocent lives to bandit attacks. The continued silence and inaction from the authorities are unacceptable.”
He criticized the military presence in the area, alleging it had exacerbated the situation through extortion and harassment rather than providing protection.
Official Response and Ongoing Concerns
Yagba West LGA Chairman Tosin Olokun visited the community, promising efforts to secure the monarch’s release and restore security. However, as of press time, the Kogi State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incidents.
The situation remains tense in Okoloke as residents await both the safe return of their traditional ruler and meaningful action from security authorities.
