Katsina Police Foil Two Kidnap Attempts, Rescue 28 Victims in Sabuwa LGA
KATSINA, Nigeria – The Katsina State Police Command successfully thwarted two separate kidnapping attempts in Sabuwa Local Government Area, rescuing a total of 28 victims while engaging armed bandits in intense gun battles.
First Kidnap Attempt Foiled on Sabuwa-Kaya Road
According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, the first incident occurred on Tuesday morning around 9:24 am. A distress call alerted authorities that suspected bandits had blocked the Sabuwa-Kaya Road at Inno Junction, abducting 14 individuals.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Sabuwa swiftly mobilized operatives to the scene,” DSP Sadiq stated. “A gun duel ensued, but the hoodlums were forced to flee due to the superior firepower and tactical response of the police.”
All 14 victims were rescued unharmed, though the bandits fatally shot a 27-year-old man identified as Abba from Funtua town in Funtua LGA.
Second Attack in Zagaizagi Village
In a related incident, another distress call was received late Sunday night (July 28) reporting an attack by armed bandits in Zagaizagi village, Sabuwa LGA. The assailants had abducted several residents before police intervention.
The DPO once again led a rapid response team that engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The operation successfully rescued another 14 victims and recovered two rustled cows. Tragically, two villagers lost their lives during the attack.
Police Commissioner Commends Officers, Urges Public Cooperation
Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, praised the officers for their bravery and professionalism in neutralizing the threats. He encouraged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and accurate information to aid swift responses to criminal activities.
“He further reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state,” the police statement emphasized.
Sabuwa LGA: A Frontline in Katsina’s Security Challenges
Sabuwa remains one of Katsina State’s most vulnerable local government areas, facing persistent threats from bandits, kidnappers, and cattle rustlers. The region has experienced a surge in kidnapping-for-ransom cases, often facilitated by local informants collaborating with criminal networks.
The recent operations demonstrate the police command’s intensified efforts to combat insecurity in the region, though challenges persist in securing remote communities vulnerable to armed attacks.
