Kano Police Arrest Ex-Convict for Defrauding Women and Stealing Phones
27-Year-Old Suspect Targeted Victims Under Guise of Government Assistance
Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Police Command has apprehended a 27-year-old ex-convict, Mohammed Usman of Kofar Wambai Quarters, for allegedly defrauding women and stealing their mobile phones across the state. The suspect reportedly operated under the pretense of offering government assistance programs.
Modus Operandi Revealed
According to police reports, Usman would approach his victims while posing as a government official offering financial aid or other forms of assistance. Once he gained their trust, he would find opportunities to steal their mobile phones and other valuables.
The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. “The suspect has been engaging in this criminal activity for some time, preying particularly on vulnerable women in different parts of the state,” Kiyawa said.
Previous Criminal Record
Authorities revealed that Usman is a known ex-convict with a history of similar offenses. His latest arrest comes after numerous complaints from victims who fell prey to his deceptive schemes.
“This is not his first encounter with law enforcement,” SP Kiyawa added. “He has been arrested and prosecuted before for related crimes, but apparently returned to his old ways after serving his sentence.”
Police Warning to the Public
The Kano Police Command has issued a warning to residents, especially women, to be cautious of individuals claiming to offer government assistance programs. They advised citizens to always verify such claims through official channels before engaging with anyone making such offers.
“We urge the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station,” Kiyawa stated. “Genuine government officials will always have proper identification and won’t ask for personal items like phones.”
Ongoing Investigation
The police have launched a thorough investigation into Usman’s activities to determine the full extent of his crimes and identify all potential victims. Authorities are working to recover stolen items and build a strong case for prosecution.
SP Kiyawa assured that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law, emphasizing the police’s commitment to protecting citizens from such fraudulent activities. “We will ensure justice is served and that this serves as a deterrent to others who might be considering similar crimes,” he said.
Community Reaction
Residents of Kano have expressed relief at the arrest, with many victims coming forward to share their experiences. Community leaders have called for stricter monitoring of ex-convicts to prevent recidivism.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about phone theft and fraud targeting vulnerable populations in Nigeria. Security experts recommend keeping valuables secure and being cautious when dealing with strangers, even those claiming official positions.
