CUPP Condemns Edo Governor’s ‘Death Threat’ Warning to Peter Obi

Governor’s Controversial Remarks Spark National Outrage
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly condemned recent statements by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who warned 2027 presidential aspirant Peter Obi against visiting the state without his permission. The coalition described the governor’s comments as “a veiled death threat” and “a disgraceful act of political thuggery” that undermines democratic principles.
Governor’s Threatening Statement
During a media briefing, Governor Okpebholo issued a stark warning to the former Anambra governor: “If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.” The governor claimed Obi’s previous visit, which included a ₦15 million donation to a nursing school, had allegedly triggered unrest in Benin City that resulted in fatalities.
CUPP’s Strong Rejection
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, CUPP declared the governor’s remarks unconstitutional and dangerous. “Okpebholo’s recorded remarks constitute a veiled death threat against a law-abiding citizen exercising his constitutional rights. It is unacceptable,” the statement read.
Constitutional Rights Under Threat
The political coalition emphasized that no Nigerian citizen should require a governor’s permission to move freely within the country. CUPP called on civil society organizations, political leaders, and democracy advocates to speak out against what it termed “an assault on freedom and decency.”
“Peter Obi’s only offense is offering humanitarian support to schools, hospitals, and displaced persons. Should that attract threats?” the statement questioned, highlighting the apparent contradiction between the governor’s actions and Nigeria’s democratic values.
Warning Signs for Nigerian Democracy
CUPP urged Nigerians to view the incident as a red flag for creeping authoritarianism, stressing that “the rule of law must prevail and no public official should be allowed to trample on the rights of citizens.” The coalition’s statement concluded with a scathing assessment: “Edo State and Nigeria deserve better than this shameful display of leadership.”
Pattern of Political Intimidation
This incident marks the second time Obi has received such warnings from governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Earlier this year, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia had reportedly cautioned the Labour Party leader about similar visits, raising concerns about a growing pattern of political intimidation against opposition figures.
The controversy has sparked nationwide debate about freedom of movement, political tolerance, and the responsibilities of elected officials in Nigeria’s democracy. Political analysts warn that such statements could further polarize the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
