The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division under its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department. This strategic move aims to harness the benefits of AI while addressing its potential risks in electoral processes.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, revealed that the decision was made during the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja. The establishment of the AI Division comes as INEC recognizes the growing importance of AI technology in elections both in Nigeria and globally.
“The interactions were not only motivated by the concern over the use of AI to spread fake news or manipulate content online, but also to utilise its benefits for data-driven decision-making, risk detection and mitigation,” Olumekun stated.

Olumekun emphasized that AI has already proven valuable in voter services automation and geo-spatial intelligence, particularly in optimizing logistics for material distribution and polling unit allocation.
